The pigeon of waterloo

Role: Writer-Director, Casting

Dir. Margaux Comte, 2022

When a man wearing a pigeon mask finally gets to spend time with his estranged teenage daughter, he becomes aware of how others perceive him and what he must do to accept himself.

The Pigeon of Waterloo is Margaux's first substential short film and her graduation film for her BA Film & TV. She wrote the film during a difficult time in her life which she overcame throughout the making of this project. This led her to think  about identity and the mask we all put on in society.

The film explores the idea that even in a big city full of people, we can often feel isolated. Our main character, Kirk feels similar to pigeons in the way that he is part of society, but often shooed or ignored. However, rather than focusing on the negative aspects of his newfound identity, he decides to focus on the positives; birds can fly.

Despite the originality of the character and story, the film strives to capture authenticity in relationships between characters. Authenticity was always put at the centre of the project to make the audience feel more connected to the film.

This project was the most challenging Margaux accomplished so far in her career, but also the most rewarding. She had the honour to work with a dedicated crew as well as a great cast. Playing the lead role is David Carlyle, who is a twice BAFTA-nominee, known for his roles in Russel T. Davies' It's A Sin  and Netflix's Bodyguard. He plays alongside first time actor Evangeline Rose who is only just fourteen years old.
